Four Important Things to Do if You Think You Have Storm Damage

Four Important Things to Do if You Think You Have Storm Damage

The builder of your home created it tough enough to protect you from Ohio storms. While it can withstand many seasons of heat and cold as well as rain, snow and winter gales, it may suffer damages under extraordinary weather events. After a punishing wind or hailstorm, you should follow these tips towards full restoration of your home.

1. Perform a Preliminary Inspection

First thing after the storm passes, you should take a walk around your property. Note the conditions of your deck, siding, window screens, garage door and exposed property. If you are able and willing, climb a ladder and check the roof. However, if there are parts of your home you can obviously see took a hammering, the odds are likely that your asphalt roof will need repairs.

2. Kindly Send Non-Local Contractors Down the Road

Storms act like Batman beacons to traveling restoration contractors. Before you can say, "Dear, do you have the phone number to our insurance company?" you'll probably have doorknockers lined up on your front stoop. While most may be honest, be aware that once they've collected as much work as they and their itinerant crews can get in Ohio, they'll move on. If you have issues with their work down the road, you may find their phones disconnected and your warranty nonexistent.

Whether you see damage or not, do call your insurance company for an adjuster to come inspect your home. Because the adjuster has the final say on any claims, not contractors, you should get the claim started first, then call contractors.

Always choose a local, established company with good credit relationships with the local supply houses. Never hand over a deposit until a substantial amount of materials have been delivered to your property. If your contractor can't order your materials on at least a 30-day credit account, then there may well be a big problem on their part.

3. Call Your Insurance Company

Whether you see damage or not, do call your insurance company for an adjuster to come inspect your home. Because the adjuster has the final say on any claims, not contractors, you should get the claim started first, then call contractors. You may want to get several bids if the adjuster approves a claim, but remember, since you only have to pay your deductible, choosing contractors based on the lowest bid makes no sense at all. Rather, select your restoration company based on reputation, quality and expertise. Let your insurer pay for craftsmanship, not fly-by-night work.
