What Parts Make Up Your Garage Door?

What Parts Make Up Your Garage Door?

Your garage door serves many important purposes. It protects your belongings from theft, helps to keep pests out and helps to keep the space warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The door also easily opens and closes, allowing you to access your garage or close it off as needed. Your garage door is made up of different parts that all work together to help your door function as it should. If one part begins to wear or fail, the door may not open or close properly. Here are a few of the parts that make up the anatomy of your garage door.

Door Panels

When you think of a garage door, the door panels are the part of the door that most people envision. The panels are the parts that make up the actual door portion of your garage door. The panels are typically connected by hinges, allowing the door to bend and shift as the door is open or closed. If your door panels are dented or damaged, they may need to be replaced.

Operator

If you have an electric garage door that can be opened with the click of a button, you have an operator. The operator is what is responsible for opening or closing your garage door when you push a button or input the code. If your door will not open or close, the operator may not have power or may need repair or replacing.

Your garage door typically has a few different rollers, also sometimes called wheels, that help with the operation of the door. The rollers should be regularly lubricated to ensure they can roll as needed.

Track

If you are standing inside your garage, open your garage door. The garage door will glide along metal pieces on the left and right-hand side of the door. These metal pieces are called tracks. The tracks form the pathways upon which the rollers on your doors can glide up and down so your garage door can open smoothly. The track system needs to be tightened routinely and inspected for dents. If dents are noted, the track may need to be replaced.

Rollers

As was mentioned above, rollers are what glide along the track to help the door open or close. Your garage door typically has a few different rollers, also sometimes called wheels, that help with the operation of the door. The rollers should be regularly lubricated to ensure they can roll as needed.

Springs

Springs, also called torsion springs, help to support the weight of the garage door as it opens or closes. You may have one large spring in the upper center inside portion of your garage door, or two, with the spring being located on both the right and side of the garage door. If the spring becomes stretched out or snaps, it needs to be replaced.
